Future Directions for NSW Local Government - Hearing May 29

The NSW Independent Local Government Review Panel has released its discussion paper ‘Future Directions for NSW Local Government – 20 Essential Steps’. Mayor Trina Thomson said “Tumut Shire Council welcomes the Discussion Paper as it deals with the issues facing communities on how they will maintain effective and sustainable local government structures into the future. “To assist our community have access to the reports, they have been made available at our offices and have been placed on Council’s webpage, Release - Independent Local Government Review Panel Report “It is important our community takes the opportunity to have their say and inform themselves in relation to the thinking of the Panel”. The discussion paper details the Panel’s conclusion and the likely shape of its final recommendations to the Government. On Wednesday, May 29th, the Panel will be holding a Community Hearing at Junee commencing at 6:00pm and concluding at 8:00pm. Council has made available the opportunity for interested persons to travel by bus to attend the hearing. To facilitate arrangements, interested persons may book a seat by contacting Amanda Hobson on 6941 2506. Bookings must be made by Tuesday, May 21st, 2013 so that arrangements can be finalised subject to interest. General Manager Bob Stewart said Councillors and Senior Staff will be attending a briefing by the Panel on the same day and he expected that Council would formulate a position shortly thereafter to enable a submission to be presented to the Panel by the 14th June, 2013. 
Public Comment Invited - Council Policy Review

 Council is in the process of reviewing all of its policies as a part of good governance and council operations. At the Finance and Strategy Ordinary Meeting held 30 April 2013 it was resolved to place the following policies on public exhibition for review and comment by the community. Rates Hardship Policy Borrowing Policy Submissions or comments regarding these policies may be made in writing to the General Manager, Tumut Shire Council, 76 Capper Street, Tumut or admin@tumut.nsw.gov.au by Friday 7 June 2013.

Council has resolved to place the Draft Integrated Planning & Reporting documents on public exhibition  for submissions or comments prior to adoption.  The following documents are on public exhibition: Draft Community Strategic Plan 2013-2023 Draft Long Term Financial Plan 2013-2023 DRAFT Delivery Program 2013-2017 incorporating Operational Plan 2013-2014 Draft Operational Budget 2013-2014 Draft Fees And Charges Schedule 2013-2014  These documents set the future direction of council and our Shire.  Council encourages the community to review these draft documents and Have Your Say.  All documents are located in Shire Libraries, Council administration building and on our website www.tumut.nsw.gov.au. Smoke Alarms

More than 40 per cent of fires happen during winter and with winter approaching, now is the time to ensure your smoke alarms are working. In NSW, it is compulsory for smoke alarms to be fitted in all new and existing buildings and moveable dwellings such as caravans and campervans, where people sleep. A smoke alarm may cost just a few dollars but it could save your life in the event of a fire.
Release - Independent Local Government Review Panel Report

The Independent Local Government Reivew panel released its third report, Future Directions for NSW Local Government, setting out the options for creating stronger local government and stronger communities in NSW. The report provides comprehensive draft options for the future of local government in NSW. It provides suggestions for improving the fiscal responsibility and financial sustainability of councils and the services and infrastructure that are critical to the sector and the State.  It provides options for new structures and boundaries in local government, designed to make councils a stronger, and a more effective partner in the State.
