The heritage listed Adelong Falls Gold Mill Ruins are what remain of a processing mill that played a very significant role in Australia’s gold mining history and it is important that these workings are preserved for the nation. The ruins of the Reefer Battery and associated structures are what remain for interpretation of how reef ore was processed on this site and are part of an extensive gold mining landscape in the Adelong and wider district, in particular the Gibraltar mine which has been identified for long term conservation works.
The Adelong Falls Gold Mill Ruins committee a 355 committee of Tumut Shire Council, comprising predominately community representatives assists in managing the site abiding by the Burra Charter, the Conservation Management Plan (2003) and the Plan of Management 2010 the committee makes recommendations to council to improve and maintain public access in and around the site, install interpretive signage, provide suitable visitor facilities and promotion of the heritage site.Since the appeal commenced important conservation works have been undertaken which have removal of unwanted and invasive vegetation stabilising of some of the lime mortar walls repair of dry stone walls improving access paths funding for this has been provided by the NSW Heritage Branch and Tumut Shire Council in addition through the Federal Government Stimulus Package a viewing platform was constructed and overlooks the creek and ruins Funding was also received to design and install detailed interpretive signage panels.
The October 2010 flood caused significant damage to the ruins in particular the tailings dams which were demolished and will not be rebuilt this demonstrated the need to maintain and stabilise any of the ruins as best as possible.Ongoing funding is required to consistently maintain the site and develop a comprehensive suite of interpretive panels within the ruins and upgrade the visitor facilities.
The committee is now appealing for public donations. Through the National Trust of Australia, the committee is able to offer donors a tax deduction for any donation above $2.00. Donations can be made at the Bendigo Bank at Adelong or to Tumut Shire Council.
