Description: What does 'heritage listings' measure?

Which data are collected?
  • number, location, use and condition of each type of heritage listing on Heritage Registers and interim lists
Why do we report this indicator?

There is a growing awareness among Australians of heritage places and objects and the importance of preserving them. These include Aboriginal sites, areas, structures or other features which have historic, scientific, aesthetic, social or traditional value.

The number and condition of heritage listings indicates the community's response to identifying and preserving heritage, as well as the value seen in heritage in maintaining a sense of place in a region - an important factor in our quality of life.

Places and objects of heritage value are identified by government and non-government agencies developing lists, registers and databases that cover natural, cultural/historic and indigenous environments. They can be listed on:

  • the Register of the National Estate
  • the World Heritage List
  • State and Territory heritage registers and lists
  • local government heritage lists
  • non-statutory lists, including National Trust lists at State, Territory and local level
  • heritage lists of professional bodies eg architects and engineers.

Objects held in Government collections are described in accession lists or catalogues, which list condition and, if cataloguing is adequate, the time and place of collection.

The number and condition of listings must be compared to those of previous reports to assess how many are being added each year, and what the total number of heritage places are likely to be.

Identification of new places is an on-going process. Places and objects that are no longer listed should be identified individually, and the reason for de-listing provided, e.g. through decay or change of use that can involve demolition or inappropriate renovation.
