Description: What does 'managing recreation and tourism' measure?

Which data are collected?
  • controls for conservation/restoration purposes on recreational and tourist activities
Why do we report this indicator?

Managing tourism and recreation so that damage to the natural and human environment is minimised is a challenge for all. It is important as it indicates the response by society to maintaining and even improving environmental quality.

Managing tourism and recreation can be implemented by Local Governments and other arms of Government by use of tools such as development controls, maintaining roads, closing roads, and other planning and regulatory mechanisms. Other options include enacting legislation or developing environmental management plans. All controls on recreational and tourist use of areas and features with environmental or heritage significance should be identified.
